A good time to be in Val!
Now that opening weekend has passed and all the clever people who turned up to take advantage of the terrific discounts that Val had on offer have left, the runs are largely empty of skiers. The skiing on Saturday, opening day, was as I had predicted in my previous Postcard: Fabulous. Lots of untracked powder everywhere which very quickly got skied out. Sunday wasn’t as good as it snowed and visibility was poor, but that made it great again on Monday, when the sky cleared, as the new snow covered the weekend tracks making a new white tableau for skiers to inscribe their own sinewy curves.
The forecast is calling for mainly clear, beautiful weather for the rest of the week, with temperatures hovering just about freezing so no need for face masks and heated boots and gloves. There’s a possibility of some snow on Saturday or Sunday.
With so few people about, you can have almost empty pistes to yourselves, mountain restaurants with no queues, no waiting to get on a lift and evening restaurants where you won’t need to book in advance with friendly unhassled staff that will welcome you with open arms and big smiles.
While Val is a great place to spend the Christmas/New Years holidays for its festivities, the first 3 weeks of December is a good time to be in Val - especially when there’s loads of snow (as there is this year)!
For an added bonus, next week of you can watch the best skiers in the world training and racing the ‘Criterium de la Premiere Neige’. There will be events for both men and women, starting on Sat, 14 Dec – 22 Dec. (See schedule below). This is one of the biggest racing events of the season in Val with loads of spectators cheering on their favorites. There will be street parties on Friday and Saturday evenings and a nice carnival atmosphere with the centre of Val closed to traffic. It should be fun!
