Global warming…… or what?

I don’t know if it is a result of global warming but this spring-like weather we are having has not yet abated. Each day the sun is shining, the sky is blue and the temperatures are hovering as they have been all of January – just around 0° C (32° F). People of course are enjoying it and loving it but at the same time would like normal winter weather to return. That would mean snow and colder temperatures. Well that is about to happen! – but it will be very short lived!! Snow is forecast for Friday and Saturday with slightly colder temperatures lasting through Tuesday and then the temperatures will rise back up the rest of the week and the blue, cloudless skies will return.
ALL the runs are now open on Solaise. The pisteurs did an amazing job getting the slab that was overhanging the ‘L’ run to break and avalanche and then they cleared the avalanche off the run and so were able to open it. They haven’t as yet been able to do that to the slab over the ‘Santon’ gully run so, as you can see on the Bellevarde piste map, that is the ONLY run closed. I’m sure they are trying to figure out a way to get that slab to also fall as they would like to have every run open. As is always the case every year, some skiers are skiing down that closed run in either unawareness or pure stupidity; most likely the latter (If the slab breaks when they are under it they will be crushed!)
One benefit of the warm weather in town is that the ice on the streets is finally melting so they are becoming less lethal. I still advise wearing ‘spikes’ on your shoes as even a small icy patch can cause a lot of damage to your body.
In the US the Impeachment of the president is the topic of discussion. Here it is the weather. So if you want to ‘escape’ political debate and disagreements with your neighbors, friends and/or family, come to Val!

Tip of the week:

If you are in Val this week (or any week) I’d recommend going to the ‘Petite Danois’ bar on Friday afternoons (5-7pm) to hear Karin and Andreas perform; they are really good. The best live late evening music is at ‘La Baraque‘ bar/restaurant, which fortunately for me is just next door to my building. (Isn’t that nice!).
