Happy Thanksgiving to all my US friends. This is the holiday where we gather with family and good friends to share a day of catching up, eating and giving blessings for what we have and are thankful for. We all have reasons to be thankful for; Val skiers this year have another one: Loads of snow in town and on the mountain!!
What a grand start it will be on Saturday when Val opens. The entire ski area is fit to ski as there is an abundance of snow on all the runs. Val usually doesn’t open every run at the start but I suspect they might this year. But even if they keep some runs closed such as the ‘L’ or ‘Santon’ which are gullies that streams flow through in the summer, there will be an enormous amount of skiing available for everyone to have a great time.
There are some new additions this season that should make being in Val even better and more fun:
The ‘Folie Douce’ will open some evenings with live music, dining and entertainment – and of course ‘partying’, Folie Douce style.
The ‘Refuge de Solaise’, on top of Solaise which used to be named the ‘Tete de Solaise’ is now complete with excellent dining, rooms and apartments, swimming pool and a spa so that you can stay on the mountain instead of town. They have an arrangement with the new ‘Val Hotel’, located next to the tourist office so you can spend some nights in town to partake in the Val bar and disco scene. Their restaurant will also be open 2 evenings a week for everyone so you can ride the cabin up the mountain in the evening and dine on the mountain top, looking down at the evening lights of Val village, which is very picturesque.
The old ‘Brussels’ hotel has been completely replaced by a super deluxe hotel called ‘Airelles Val d’Isère – Mademoiselle’. It will have 41 rooms, apts with butler service, 4 restaurants and up market boutiques. Very classy! It is right on the slopes so it should be a good place to have a nice lunch on the terrace on a warm, sunny day (though I am sure it will be costly!!!). They also have taken over the ‘Grande Ourse’ and will offer skier lunches at mid day – lets hope it will be as good as the original ‘Grande Ourse’ cuisine.
And, what everyone will like, Val now will have free WIFI available both in town and on the slopes.
There are a few more new additions, such as a new restaurant selling pastas and pizzas on the mountain but rather than noting them I think it will be more fun to discover them yourself.
So it’s time to search in your closets for your ski gloves, goggles and the rest of your ski gear that you have stored over the summer, get your edges sharpened (though you may not need sharp edges as with all the snow cover you shouldn’t be hitting any rocks on the runs), and your skis waxed! (something to be sure to do before you start skiing as properly waxed skis will make your skiing more enjoyable and safer), and start to plan your holiday to Val.
I look forward to seeing you there.
And just to whet the appetite of anyone who is planning on coming to ski this weekend, snow is currently falling and the forecast is for 40- 50cm (16-20”) to fall by Saturday. So you will have fresh powder to start your season. Wont that be a gas!
