Mr. SkiTips Comment: I often see people skiing with their arms held down at their sides, lifting one arm to plant the ski pole when they want to turn, and then dropping it down again at the side.

Hold both your arms in front of you as though you are carrying a tray, with your ski poles pointed backwards. When you are ready to turn simply cock your wrist (of your downhill arm) and lightly plant the ski pole in the snow (often just a touch is all that is required). Then, as you start your turn, uncock your wrist so the ski pole is again pointing backwards, tilted slightly down toward the snow.

CAUTION: I have seen people injure their wrists when falling as their ski straps twisted their wrists beneath their body. I recommend having ski straps that can release when pressure is applied to them, as can happen during a fall. This, for the wrists, is the eqivalent of release ski bindings for the ski boots. I usually ski with my hands out of the ski straps, using the straps when I am in places where dropping and possibly losing a ski pole could cause problems, such as when I am ski touring out of bounds and am traversing across a steep slope.
